Position Summary:
As the Director of our SALT Practice, you will be instrumental in building and leading a thriving team, driving revenue growth, and delivering strategic SALT solutions to a diverse client base. This role demands a seasoned professional with deep technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and a proven track record of practice development. You will oversee all aspects of SALT services, including compliance, consulting, planning, and controversy, while fostering strong client relationships and positioning our firm as a market leader.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Practice Leadership & Development:
- Establish and execute a strategic vision to build and position the firm’s SALT practice as a premier market leader.
- Proactively identify and pursue business development opportunities, targeting new clients and expanding services with existing clients, contributing directly to revenue growth.
- Collaborate with firm leadership to integrate SALT services into the broader tax and advisory service lines, maximizing client value.
- Technical Expertise & Client Advisory:
- Provide expert guidance on complex state and local tax issues, including income/franchise tax, sales and use tax, property tax, credits and incentives, and nexus studies.
- Lead SALT compliance, planning, and audit defense engagements for clients across multiple jurisdictions and industries, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Stay abreast of legislative and regulatory changes, providing proactive insights and strategic advice to clients and the firm.
- Represent clients in state tax audits, appeals, and voluntary disclosure agreements, achieving favorable outcomes.
- Client Relationship Management:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for high-value SALT client engagements, delivering exceptional, tailored solutions.
- Cultivate and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients, acting as a trusted advisor to middle-market companies and large multistate enterprises.
- Proactively assess and recommend strategic solutions to complex state and local tax issues, clearly communicating alternatives and substantiating outcomes.
- Team Leadership & Development:
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of SALT professionals, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented culture.
- Provide ongoing training and thought leadership to enhance the firm’s overall SALT knowledge and capabilities.
- Supervise and review team deliverables, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional client service.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or JD required.
- Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in state and local taxation, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Extensive knowledge of multistate tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Proven success in business development, with a demonstrable track record of building client relationships and driving practice growth.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex tax concepts to diverse audiences.
- Experience in a public accounting or consulting environment, preferably within a mid-to-large-sized firm.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or advanced degree preferred.
- Experience acting as a trusted advisor to executive level clients.
