We’re opening the playbook on the SC.CPA Cup. These aren’t just sessions — they’re game plans. Each one is built to sharpen your strategy, strengthen your positioning, and help you move the ball forward in a profession that’s changing fast.
This week, we’re going Inside the Playbook with a sneak peek at “All the Queen’s Horses”, led by Larry Finney, Founding Partner of Greene Finney Cauley, LLP. The session examines how the Dixon, Illinois fraud unfolded over two decades—and what the breakdown in oversight, internal controls, and audit judgment teaches accountants about adjusting their positioning and approach in an environment where pressure, pace, and risk keep rising.
One of the largest municipal frauds happened in the little town of Dixon, Illinois. Over $50 million dollars was embezzled over a 20‑plus‑year period by one finance employee. The first question almost everyone asks is, “How in the world could over $50 million be taken from a town that had a general fund budget of under $5 million when it started?” Great question! Join us and we will watch a documentary about what and how it happened, and then we will talk about it. Whether you provide attest services to local governments (in this case the auditors messed up big time and paid a big price for it) or you work with a local government (while only one person committed the fraud, there are plenty of others who should have realized something was amiss way before it was discovered), there is plenty for us to discuss and learn.
