We’re opening the playbook on the SC.CPA Cup. These aren’t just sessions — they’re game plans. Each one is built to sharpen your strategy, strengthen your positioning, and help you move the ball forward in a profession that’s changing fast.
This week, we’re going Inside the Playbook with a sneak peek at “Budgeting from the Bottom Up”, led by Ruth King, Founder and CEO of Financially Fit Business, LLC. The session breaks down how accountants can adjust their positioning, adapt their approach, and stay competitive as the profession’s pace and pressure continue to rise.
Most budgeting processes look at revenue as the starting point. What if you turned the process around? Start with desired profit which can be based on profits in previous years. What would it take to increase profits by 10% rather than 5%?
This session examines the budgeting process from the bottom of the profit and loss statement rather than the top. The process begins with the profit desired for the company or a revenue producing department. Then the overhead the company or department needs to cover for those earnings. Then from the gross profit you can determine the needed revenue.
During the process net profit per unit of revenue, overhead cost per unit of revenue, and other metrics are determined to create a living budget.
Then, business owners should review their budget against actual results. During this session you’ll see how to review the results on a continual basis, not just comparing a specific month against that month’s budget.
In this session you’ll learn to:
- Understand the budgeting process starting with profit rather than revenue.
- Understand net profit per unit of revenue and overhead cost per unit of revenue.
- Understand how to make this budget a living document that can easily track progress towards achieving the desired budget.
