Tax Conformity Update: Where Things Stand—and What Comes Next

Leaders from the Association met with legislative leadership Feb. 3 regarding the importance of passing a tax conformity bill for the 2025 filing season. Legislative leaders indicated that conformity remains a priority and is expected to follow the passage of the tax reform bill.

The conformity bill is anticipated to mirror the provisions outlined in the reform legislation and decouple from federal provisions. The Association has been clear with leadership that, should the current position change, the conformity bill will need to include automatically amending previously filed returns.

The Department of Revenue issued this information letter on Jan. 30 with guidance. This guidance is correct until such time the legislature addresses conformity. As the Association learns additional details about the bill, they will be shared with you.

The feedback received from Association members has been valuable, and the need for timely conformity remains clear. Early clarity on filing rules supports accurate and efficient tax preparation for both practitioners and taxpayers. Telling client stories helps the legislators better understand what constituents are facing and the real-world impact of inaction.

Feb. 11 is Love Our Legislators Day, where communication with legislators will continue on the importance of prioritizing conformity as soon as possible. While the timing is challenging, your participation strengthens the profession’s presence at the State House. If you plan to attend, complete the RSVP form.

Thank you for your ongoing support in amplifying this message.

The Association remains committed to protecting and promoting the profession, and we will keep our members updated as events unfold.
