Maybank Properties, LLC, a well-established, family-owned real estate enterprise based in Charleston, South Carolina, is seeking a Senior Accountant to join their team immediately in their Charleston office on a full-time basis. Maybank Properties manages a diverse portfolio of over 20 affiliated entities with combined annual revenues of approximately $10 million, and the organization’s holdings span industrial, commercial, agricultural, investment, and residential assets, as well as several operating companies and investment partnerships.
This position is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who takes pride in accuracy, organization, and closing books promptly each month. The Senior Staff Accountant will oversee one full-time associate accountant and coordinate with two part-time remote accountants, working closely with management and the Controller. The role provides the satisfaction of high-level accounting work within a close-knit, values-driven family enterprise that prioritizes accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the monthly and year-end close process for approximately 20 separate entities, ensuring all books are closed accurately within 15–20 days of each month-end.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements, trial balances, and reconciliations for accuracy and consistency.
- Oversee AP and AR collections and payments.
- Oversee and perform general ledger maintenance, journal entries, intercompany reconciliations, and consolidated reporting where applicable.
- Supervise and review work prepared by the associate and part-time accountants, providing direction, training, and quality control.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
- Ensure accuracy in bank and credit card reconciliations, loan amortizations.
- Support the Controller with financial analysis, entity-level review, and audit/tax preparation coordination.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms, attorneys, and financial advisors regarding financial reporting.
- Maintain rigorous standards of documentation, internal controls, and recordkeeping consistent with a multi-entity family office environment.
- Manage capital calls and distributions between the various entities and partners.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA license is a plus.
- 5 – 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in multi-entity or family-office environments, public accounting, or real estate settings.
- Supervisory experience required.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple sets of books simultaneously and close monthly financials on a consistent timeline.
- Strong technical proficiency in Excel. Experience with cloud document management preferred. Acumatica is the Cloud ERP system used for accounting and financial reporting.
- Deep understanding of GAAP, intercompany accounting, and cash/accrual basis reconciliations.
- Exceptional attention to detail and proven ability to produce accurate entries and financial reports under deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with senior management, family members, and professional advisors.
- Integrity, discretion, and professional maturity in handling confidential family and financial matters.
